The pro-gay website Identity Kenya disputes claims that a gay-friendly Methodist bishop in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya was beaten and his orphanage destroyed.
The website for Trinity Methodist Church Kenya asked for contributions to rebuild the orphanage and school after an alleged $187,000 worth of damage was done to it by anti-gay armed men.
The website identified the victim as “Bishop Kamau” and said he had been beaten so badly that he had to be hospitalized for three days.
Identity Kenya, which describes itself as “Kenya’s LGBTI and Sex Work Community website,” said:
“A cleric in Nakuru county who claimed to have been attacked over his ministry for gay, lesbian Christians has been revealed to be a fake.”
It quoted the Rev. John Makokha, the CEO of Other Sheep-Afrika Kenya, as saying the bishop was Josam Kariuki, “one of the most homophobic and unschooled [theologically] church leaders” in the United Methodist Church.
Makokha said that, in an earlier conversation, Kariuki “wanted to know if we receive funds from faith-based affirming groups in America and Europe. … He sounds fake in his claims.”
The alleged attack was reported in LGBT-friendly websites Queering the Church and Changing Attitude.
