‘Kill the Gays’ bill has opponents in Uganda parliament
Uganda’s proposed “Kill the Gays” bill has opponents within the Ugandan parliament, as became clear with the recent release of a draft minority report asking legislators to reject it.
The Civil Society Coalition opposing the bill released a copy of the draft report, noting that “members of the Ugandan parliament have stepped out of the majority to present their views. … The members belong to the Legal and Parliamentary Committee of parliament. We hope that the minority report will be permitted for hearing when the bill is tabled.”
The minority report states, “What two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom should not be the business of this Parliament.”
The report also states that many sections of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which is nicknamed the “Kill the Gays” bill, are already covered by existing Ugandan laws.
Names of members of parliament attached to the minority report are Hon. Otada Sam Amooti of Kibanda County, Independent; Hon. Fox Odoi Oywelowo of West Budama County, Independent; Hon. Katuntu Abdu, Bugweri County, FDC; and Hon. Ayena Krispus of Oyam North; UPC.
