Saudi Arabia has ordered government schools and universities to ban gays and tomboys, the news website Emirates 24/7 reported, citing the Arabic language daily newspaper Sharq.

The Saudi government’s Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice will enforce the rule, Sharq said.

Gay and tomboy students could return to school if they proved “they have been corrected and have stopped such practices,” the newspaper said.

It said the commission was ordered to work harder to combat the gay “phenomenon, which has been promoted by some websites,” and to oppose “unacceptable behavior” in public places.
