African hypocrisy about sport, church, beds and gays

When an anti-gay organization in Zimbabwe recently made the untrue but oft-repeated claim that homosexuality is an “un-African” import from the West, a reader known as “OneLove” responded with this pointed commentary about the hypocrisy of attacking one group’s sexual orientation as “un-African” while embracing many much-beloved aspects of the country’s culture that actually did originate outside Africa. Starting with Christianity:

It is appalling to see as a black Zimbabwean how a group can form to counter “Western influence” when they wouldn’t dare walk into a church and call every single Christian a sell out-out. How dare they for one minute think that Christianity is remotely African?

Why don’t you ban cricket as well? Why don’t you walk to a Warriors game and say to the crowds to stop trying to be white??

How dare they worry the government of who someone sleeps with, meanwhile men, women, children are dying of disease, abuse, an ailing economy (Western construct)?

How dare you go home into your Western-styled house, eat your dinner with a fork and knife, sit down and watch Western TV and sleep in a “Western bed” and still have the audacity to denounce human nature as being a Western construct. …

For all you commenters, God asks us one thing and that is to “Love one another.” At no point does he give you the right to oppress other people to fulfil his Word.
