Two lesbian members of the New Zealand parliament recently worked hard lobbying against a proposed anti-homosexual bill under consideration in Uganda, the GayNZ website reported.

Jan Logie from the Green Party and Louisa Wall from the Labour Party made clear their position on the so-called “kill the gays” bill during their recent trip to Kampala, Uganda, for the summit meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Logie and Wall met with LGBT activists in Uganda and sent letters opposing the bill tofor drafted letters to the leaders of all the Ugandan political parties including one to President Yoweri Museveni and leaders of all Ugandan political parties.

“If this draconian bill passes, it will institute the death penalty for some ‘acts of homosexuality’ and will require other people to dob in gays to the police within 24 hours of realising their sexuality. Failure to do so will result in them becoming liable to prosecution themselves,” Wall said.

The bill was proposed by Uganda MP David Bahati. He says that the death-penalty provision has been removed from the bill, but opponents are skeptical about that.
