U.S. group tackles anti-homosexuality laws in 76 countries
This column in the Orange County Register highlights the work of Spirit of 76 Worldwide in seeking to repeal anti-homosexuality laws in 76 countries:
While the debate regarding civil rights and gay marriage rages on in this county, in 76 countries around the world, including Africa and the Middle East, being gay could be a death sentence.
A pending anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda proposes death for HIV positive gay men and prison for anyone who fails to turn in a known homosexual.
Now there’s a group in Orange County, led by the Rev. Canon Albert Ogle, hoping to fight the injustices in Uganda.
Ogle was rector of St. George’s Episcopalian Church in Laguna Hills from 1997 to 2006. Now he’s president of the St. Paul’s Foundation for International Reconciliation with offices in San Diego, Nairobi, and Kenya.

Though these injustices seem worlds away, Ogle and group are trying to make a difference. History is full of stories where social change was initiated by a small group who dared to bring awareness and action.
As Ogle told me, no one should be put to death or locked in prison just for being who they are.
