Two men were arrested by the police in Maroua, northern Cameroon, on Dec. 28,  around 2 a.m., as they were leaving a party.

According to law enforcement, Algernon, 32, and Mo, 28, were caught touching each other in public, which led to their arrest on suspicion of homosexuality. A scuffle with the arresting officers left Algernon with a large scar on his back.

Seven months later, Mo and Algernon (both pseudonyms) remain incarcerated in Maroua Prison with no trial in sight.

They have no attorney and have not even appeared before a judge. They receive no visits or support from friends or families. They must make do with the one daily meal provided by the prison, while enduring harsh detention conditions.

Mo and Algernon are two of the 12 LGBTQ prisoners in Cameroon and Nigeria whom Project Not Alone 2025 aims to set free by paying their fines and legal fees.  To help them, make a U.S. tax-deductible donation to Project Not Alone 2025.

Double your gift

A generous supporter of  Project Not Alone has offered to match donors’ gifts up to a total of $1,000.  Please consider taking her up on that offer and doubling the impact of your gift as we raise money to free the two men.

If readers provide the necessary funds — an estimated 400,000 CFA francs beyond what Project Not Alone has already paid (about US $714) , Mo and Algernon will get a chance for long-delayed justice.  Donated money will be used to pay the unavoidable legal expenses of an attorney who is willing to represent them pro bono.
