As a transgender rights activist, Aimé Kiki patiently sets about doing work that isn’t glamorous. But the work of empowering trans people in the fight against HIV and Covid-19 is important and now it has been honored by the World Health Organization.
A video about her work with HIV-positive trans Cameroonians was recognized recently as a finalist in the WHO’s Health For All film festival. The organization stated:
“For Aimé Kiki, a transgender woman living in Yaoundé, Cameroon, a part of her everyday life is to be stigmatized and rejected while also confronting the constant threat of violence and arrest.
“Despite these overwhelming challenges, Kiki remains undeterred in her struggle to eliminate social rejection and discrimination and protect the human rights of people in her community.”
The Covid-19 pandemic has also created new barriers preventing transgender people from accessing the health care they need, Kiki said.
The Cameroonian association Affirmative Action added, “A committed activist, she works for the respect of the rights of members of her community who generally face social rejection and discrimination.”
